Public transportation Since its inception in 1979, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) has nearly doubled its ridership, tripled its bus fleet, won accolades for its service and set industry standards for use of new technology. A light rail system serving downtown and the Texas Medical Center is METRO's latest major project.
